Tectonic Plates

Earth’s layers are classified either by their chemical composition or characteristics of rocks. The surface of the earth is broken up into seven major and eight minor tectonic plates, found under land masses and the ocean. They make up pieces of the planet’s lithosphere, or outermost shell, that include the crust and upper part of the mantle.

The seven major plates are: the African, Antarctic, Eurasian, Indo-Australian, North American, Pacific, and the South American. They slowly move around on the surface of the earth. Depending on how they move, the boundaries between plates create different landforms or processes, such as valleys, geysers, mountains, volcanoes, or deep ocean trenches.
